Welcome to the 2016-2017 School Year here at TAS.
The purpose of this letter is to introduce myself as your new College and Guidance Counselor. My name is Jacqueline Contreras, and I look forward to working with you and your child this year. I have spent my career working in schools around the world as a school counselor, clinical social worker and special education teacher, and have developed a deep love and compassion for all children. My philosophy is governed by my belief that every child has their own unique qualities, abilities, interests and ways of presenting themselves in life, therefore all children should have the opportunity to learn in a safe and nurturing environment.
As a parent, You are the biggest influence in your child's life and education. You are the ones who care for your child through the years, by feeding and clothing them, and loving and teaching them right from wrong. It is my belief that the difference between a good school and a great school is the involvement of its parents.
My role as the College and Guidance Counselor at TAS is to work with students, parents, teachers, and administrators in order to develop an overall well-being of each student in our school. Some of the areas I will be addressing with the students include academic, college/career, personal, social and emotional skills.
The focus for the academic/college aspect is to enable students to acquire the attitudes, knowledge, and skills necessary to contribute to effective learning in school and across their lifespan. High school is exciting, challenging and marks an incredible period of growth for students and families. As your college/career counselor I am here to help ensure that the high school years are as successful as possible and to help our students make the most of their high school experience. From academic issues to personal challenges, I am here to help students navigate obstacles, meet their personal goals and fully explore their opportunities. Our comprehensive approach includes individual meetings and large and small group seminars from studying skills and personal growth, to college counseling and career exploration.
The focus for the personal, social and emotional skills aspect is to enable the students to acquire the knowledge, interpersonal, conflict resolution skills and attitudes necessary to help students understand and respect themselves and others. Group and individual counseling sessions for students to support their positive and successful engagement as well as consultation to parents on issues of parenting and child development are available.
I look forward to meeting you during our Back to School Night on August 18, 2016. If you have any questions or concerns, I am here to help! My contact information is listed below. Please feel free to contact me at any time.
Thank you and I look forward to a great year!
