The American School-Vietnam Contracts with Fairmont Education Group to Further Strengthen Academic Program

December 2013

ANAHEIM, CA December 20, 2013 - Fairmont Education Group announced this month that they will be contracting with The American School (TAS)-Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) to offer a range of consultative services related to strengthening the schools' academic programs. Fairmont will bring 60 years of educational experience to bear in assisting TAS-Vietnam with teacher support and training, curriculum review and development, student assessment, WASC accreditation, and alignment of TAS-Vietnam's overall program with U.S. standards of educational excellence and best practices. The new agreement deepens a relationship that began with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the school in 2010.

The American School-Vietnam was founded by local resident and American citizen, Nguyen Minh Phu, who has three school-aged children and wanted to create a school environment better suited to meeting both his own children's educational needs and those of native Vietnamese and expats. Fairmont has been providing limited consultative services for the school since 2010, but Fairmont teachers and staff will now become more actively involved in providing guidance and support, visiting the school 10 times in the coming year.

Mr. Phil Nguyen (TAS Chairman), Mr. Francis Radano (TAS Head of school, 2010),  Mr. John Barrier (Fairmont Director of International Program) and Mr. Pattrick Vu (Fairmont Study Aboard Agent)

In some ways, Nguyen's drive to start TAS-Vietnam mirrors the desires of Fairmont Private Schools' founder Kenneth Holt. A former public school educator, Holt became disenchanted with what he perceived as low standards and expectations in public schools and founded Fairmont's first campus in 1953. Both TAS-Vietnam and Fairmont strive for academic excellence and the development of the whole child.

"There are many similarities between our programs," says Fairmont's Director of International Education, John Barrier. "Both of our programs were established with the goal of the educational opportunities for students and greatly enhancing their chances of success in college and later in their personal and professional lives. We are very impressed with the quality of The American School-Vietnam's faculty and staff and how well prepared they are from an operational and educational standpoint."

At the suggestion of Vietnam's education authorities and in order to assure the highest academic standards for their new academic program, TAS-Vietnam sought an agreement with a successful school in the U.S. to help reinforce their mission, "to provide a stimulating, challenging, engaging and nurturing learning environment in which students deepen their knowledge of the world, develop their intellectual and social skills, and express themselves with thought, integrity and creativity."

The American School-Vietnam prepares graduates to continue their education at U.S. colleges and universities. Fairmont Private Schools' Preparatory Academy in Anaheim, CA already has a number of international students and maintains 100 percent college acceptance rate, with 86 percent of students matriculating at Top 100 colleges and universities (as defined by US News and World Report). Fairmont is proud to partner with TAS-Vietnam as its first senior class prepares for college this year.

The agreement with Fairmont will be especially helpful in ensuring that TAS-Vietnam graduates are prepared for the rigors of quality U.S. colleges and universities. The school will rely upon Fairmont's experience as they build a strong Advanced Placement (AP) curriculum. Fairmont Private Schools has one of the most successful AP programs in the U.S. in terms of the depth and breadth of curriculum and overall student pass rates. In addition, Fairmont will be assisting with the school's pursuit of WASC accreditation.

Fairmont Education Group Announces Partnership With the American School

July 2010

ANAHEIM, CA July 28, 2010 - Earlier this month, Fairmont Education Group signed a Memorandum of (Understanding) with The American School (TASV) in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). Fairmont will offer a range of consultative services including curriculum review and development, faculty training, and guidance as The American School seeks accreditation through Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). This agreement comes just weeks after Fairmont announced its partnership with Ambow Education Group, a leading provider of educational services in China.

"As Fairmont's International Education Programs and international student acceptance have grown over the past seven years, we have built a strong presence in the Pacific Rim," says Fairmont's CEO Robertson Chandler. "Primary and secondary education in the region is evolving as students and their parents look to American college acceptance as the end goal. Fairmont is excellently positioned to meet this need with the help of partner programs like The American School."

The American School, set to open for students in August 2010, was founded by local resident and American citizen, Nguyen Minh Phu, who has three school-aged children and wanted to create a school environment better suited to meeting both his own children's educational needs and those of native Vietnamese and expats.

In some ways, Nguyen's drive to start The American School mirrors the desires of Fairmont Private Schools' founder Kenneth Holt. A former public school educator, Holt became disenchanted with what he perceived as low standards and expectations in public schools and founded Fairmont's first campus in 1953. Both TASV and Fairmont strive for academic excellence and the development of the whole child.

"There are many similarities between our programs," says Fairmont's Director of International Education, John Barrier, who began the dialogue between Fairmont and The American School during a recent visit to the Pacific Rim. "Both of our programs were established with the goal of improving the educational opportunities for students and greatly enhancing their chances of success in college and later in their personal and professional lives. We are very impressed with the quality of The American School's faculty and staff and how well prepared they are from an operational and educational standpoint."

At the suggestion of Vietnam's education authorities and in order to assure the highest academic standards for their new academic program, TASV sought an agreement with a successful school in the U.S. to help reinforce their mission, "to provide a stimulating, challenging, engaging and nurturing learning environment in which students deepen their knowledge of the world, develop their intellectual and social skills, and express themselves with thought, integrity and creativity."

The American School anticipates that many of their students will transfer to a college preparatory high school in the U.S. in order to facilitate their acceptance to top American colleges and universities. Fairmont Private Schools' Preparatory Academy in Anaheim, CA already has a number of international students and is one of the strongest college preparatory high schools on the West Coast with over 65% of 2010 graduates matriculating to the nation's top 100 colleges (as ranked by U.S. News and World Report). The agreement with Fairmont will be especially helpful in ensuring that TASV graduates are prepared for the rigors of quality U.S. colleges and universities. As the school grows, they plan to implement an Advanced Placement (AP) curriculum. Fairmont Private Schools has one of the most successful AP programs in the U.S. in terms of the depth and breadth of curriculum and overall student pass rates.

Fairmont will bring 57 years of educational excellence to bear in assisting TASV with teacher support and training, curriculum review and development, student assessment, and alignment of TASV's overall program with U.S. standards of educational excellence and best practices. In turn, as TASV's secondary program grows, a significant number of students may choose to complete their high school studies at Fairmont Preparatory Academy in Anaheim, CA.

As a gesture of goodwill, The American School has established a yearly $1,000 Book Scholarship that will be awarded to a graduating Fairmont Prep student who best embodies the values of cultural exchange.
